Academic work is about people and if you don鈥檛 care about people, you cannot care about the science they do鈥

What makes work at the C虏DH unique

Research at the C虏DH is conceived as a trading zone, where people from different disciplines meet, interact and learn from each other. It鈥檚 an experimental space for knowledge production and dissemination at the intersection of data science and history. Interdisciplinarity is at the very heart of the concept of trading zone: the transfer and exchange of concepts, methods, tools, techniques and skills between or across different disciplinary fields or domains.

The concept of flat hierarchies, transparency, shared authority and responsibility has proven itself to benefit productivity and discussion culture across disciplines

We encourage our colleagues to experiment, to perceive science as a way to create uncertainty in a creative and playful approach. In 2021, Prof. Andreas Fickers鈥 efforts to shape the next generation of independent researchers was recognized with the FNR award for outstanding mentor.

I came to the C虏DH for what academics like to call ‘networking and scientific exchange’ and found something much better: a community of genuinely curious, generous and inspiring colleagues. The atmosphere is collaborative in the best possible way 鈥 supportive, yet never complacent.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the C虏DH: it鈥檚 a safe space for contemporary historians who enjoy experimenting with digital methods.鈥
