Born in 1964 in Germany, Jörg Gerkrath conducted studies in law in France at the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõversities of Montpellier I (1986 – 1989), Paris II (1989 – 1990) and Strasbourg III (1990 – 1996), where he obtained a PhD degree in law in 1996. Since September 2000 he is Professor for Public Law of the French Law schools.

He began his academic career as research and teaching assistant at the Robert Schuman ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõversity Strasbourg (12/1991 – 08/1996) before joining the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut im Wissenschaftszentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen, Essen, as postdoctoral researcher within the interdisciplinary working Group “Staatswerdung Europas” (09/ 1996 – 08/1997). He then worked as a lecturer at the Robert Schuman ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõversity of Strasbourg (09/1997 – 08/2000) before becoming Professor of Public Law at the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõversity of Avignon (09/2000 – 09/2006). On secondment from the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõversity of Avignon, he joined the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõ in December 2006 as Professor for European law.

Jörg Gerkrath taught European ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõon law at the ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõversities of Montpellier 1, Aix -Marseille III, Strasbourg III and Chulalangkorn in Bangkok. His main areas of research are European law, constitutional law, comparative law and fundamental rights. He is the author of “L’Emergence d’un droit constitutionnel pour l’Europe” (Editions de l’ULB, Brussels 1997) and numerous articles and papers on various aspects of European and constitutional law.

He published the book “La jurisprudence de la Cour Constitutionnelle du Luxembourg – 1997-2007” (Pasicrisie Luxembourg , 2008) and coordinated the books “Droit d’asile au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg et en Europe” (Larcier , Brussels 2009) and « La refonte de la Constitution luxembourgeoise en débat » (Larcier, Brussels 2010). He is a member of the editorial board of the European Constitutional Law Review, Cambridge ³ÉÈËÍ·Ìõversity Press.
